Stop 1: Kaimu
Before the recent eruptions of Puu Oo started in 1983, there was a charming selection of old Hawaiian buildings in the town of Kaimu. Many of these were destroyed by the lava flows between 1983 and 1990, or had to be moved to safer ground.
This small church escaped the destruction in Kaimu, and was transported on the back of a flat-bed truck as the lava flows invaded the town in the mid-1980's.
From here you can continue on to Stop 2 on the ground, or you can pick another point from the Big Island Virtual Field Trip page.
