Stop 6: North Kohala Coast
The north coast of Kohala volcano is a delightful place, over-looking the Alenuihaha Channel with the island of Maui in the distance. One of the best places to visit in this part of the island is the town of Kapaau, which has several art stores, an excellent ice cream factory(!) and other fun places to see.
In Kapaau, you can find the original King Kamehemeha statue. There is another one like this in downtown Honolulu on Oahu, but this one is the original that was once lost at sea when the ship that was carrying it from Boston to Hawaii sank off the Falkland Islands. After a replacement statue had been made and sent to Honolulu, this one was recovered and was brought to Kohala, which was Kamehameha's home district.
From here you can continue on to Stop 7 on the ground, or you can pick another point from the Big Island Virtual Field Trip page.
