Today we went to the Green Point Nursery (map point 7) where it was interesting to learn about those beautiful anthuriums. They come in different colors: light red, red, pink, white, green, purple, dark red. Our guide said that if you cross two anthuriums together, if you are lucky, you get a flower of different color.

Then, we went over to the Volcanoes National Park (map point 8). We learned about the different types of lava. We then hiked accross Kilauea Iki crater!

The vent from the Lava Fountain.

Boy was it a hot and long walk, but interesting. There were many ferns growing in the rain forest around the crater. I learned to tell which fern is which. There were also Lehua trees (when I came back with my family in the summer, I bought Lehua honey and Lehua honey wine made at the Volcano winery with honey from the Lehua blossoms).

After the 2-hour hike accross Kilauea Iki, we went into the Thurston Lava tube twice. I had forgotten my camera in the bus, but here is a picture from the Virtually Hawaii virtual field trip (which had helped me prepare my school trip).

After lunch, we saw two Nene geese eating 'ohelo' berries along the edge of the crater (click here to learn more about the Nene goose)

Then we visited the Mauna Loa macademia nut factory and tasted some chocolate macademia nuts.
