Stop 3: The Coastal Plain
It's very hot as one drives down from Kilauea summit to the coast, but you must stop to look around you at some of the turn-off points on the road. here are two of the things that you can see.
This is the same part of the pali that we saw at Stop No. 2 , except this time we are looking up-slope to the pali. Notice the road that cuts across the dark lava flows from top right to bottom left -- we've just "driven" down this between this stop and the previous one.
If you turn around, and look north along the coast, you will probably get this view. If you do, you're in luck, because the big cloud of smoke shows that there are lava flows entering the ocean. Let's hurry to Stop No. 4 to see the action!
