Kilauea Caldera continues to expand through the collapse of the rim crest due to slumping. Here we see two views of the same part of the Crater Rim Trail (close to Volcano House), as viewed in 1982 (left) and in 1989. In the interval between these two images being taken, a major earthquake took place beneath Mauna Loa that caused part of the road to fall into the caldera. If you visit this site, be careful!
You have now completed the tour around Kilauea Crater. If you would like, you may revisit any of the locations by picking a point from the Kilauea Crater Ground Tour.
