This is an air Site of the surface of the September 1982 lava flow, taken in August 1984. The "wave-like" pattern on the surface is a series of pressure ridges that formed on the surface of the flow as the eruption was approaching its end; there was considerable "drain-back" of lava back into the vent at the end of the activity, and this caused the cooling surface to be deformed in a comparable way to the ropes on a pahoehoe lava flow. These undulations are ~10 - 15 cm high.

From here you can continue on to Site 19 or you can pick another point from the Radar Tourpage.
