Mature ferns and Ohia forest characterize the area near to the entrance of Thurston Lava Tube. This wide-angle view shows that there are places where there are clearings in the trees are 15 - 20 meters wide. A mature understory has also evolved, with dead trees and a soil overlying the old lava flow surface. This type of vegetation cover is very typical of the forest on the NE side of the caldera (e.g., the trees seen in the distance at Site #7 and Site #8 ). This type of vegetation is displayed on the radar image as uniformly bright.
