The northern side of Kilauea Iki crater provides an excellent view of the deformation associated with the drain-back of the lava lake at the end of the 1959 eruption. In this view we can see the blocky surface of the lava lake that deformed against the crater wall. However, towards the center of the crater (to left), the surface of the solidified lake is very smooth (see Site #24 ).
