The area downwind from the 1959 Kilauea Iki eruption is starting to recover from the deposition of several meters of ash on top of the rain forest. Along Devastation Trail, one can find several isolated bushes that are 3 - 5 meters tall that have grown up over the last 35 years. This image was taken in September 1983.
