Viewed from the rim of Kilauea Caldera, some of the recent (1971) lava flows show a generally smooth surface at the decameter scale, but many individual pressure ridges at the tens of cm scale. This appears to be shown as a radar-dark surface at L-band. This type of unit is very similar to the floor of Kilauea Iki (Site #23), or to the surface of the September 1982 lava flow (Site #18). It is also very characteristic of the surface of any "trapped" lava flow, such as the ones that formed in pit craters and lava lakes along the Chain of Craters Road.
