Giant blocks of the old Mauna Iki lava shield make up the dark areas seen here (close to the upper edge of the dark area as seen here, these blocks may be 5 - 10 m in width). The shield comprised large volumes of lava during the eruption that eventually broke through the side of the cone. When this failure took place, "rafts" of the old flank were transported away downslope. The summit of Mauna Iki is off to the top left in this view.
