Maui Ground Tour

Stop 10.3: Haleakala Crater Floor

It may be a long walk (expect to take 7 to 8 hours for the round-trip, or plan an overnight stay), but taking a hike into Haleakala Crater is really wonderful. All of the lava flows, cinder cones and silverswords make this a highly recommended day out.

There is a special part of the trail called "Silversword Loop" where you can see hundreds of these wonderful plants.

It may look like the surface of the Moon, but fortunately you don't have to work as hard to get there. Here the low Sun makes the view of the Crater floor look really desolate.

Heading off towards Kaupo Gap, there is a series of giant cinder cones on the floor of the Crater. There is also a trail (Kaupo Trail) and a cabin at Kapalaloa that you can use if you want to make your hike into an all-weekend trip.

You have now completed the ground tour around Maui. If you would like, you may have a look at Maui from the air or revisit any of the ground locations by returning to the Maui Virtual Field Trip page.
