THE SCENERY OF KAIWI AND WAIMANALO

This odd looking feature (behind where the people are standing) is an outstanding example of a filled lava tube, and it is located on the ocean side of Makapuu Head. Visitors to Virtually Hawaii's tours of Kilauea Volcano may have seen our pictures of active lava tubes, but here the old tube became filled with cooling lava at the end of the eruption. Scientists from around the world have used the example that we see here to develop ideas on how hot lava may cut into the pre-existing rock.
