U.S.S. Missouri The World's Most Historic Battleship
Fondly called "Mighty Mo", the U.S.S. Missouri was launched on January 29, 1944. The ship was in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa in World War II, and on September 2, 1945 the signing of the Formal Instrument of Surrender by Japan to the Allied Powers took place on the Missouri. Might Mo also participated in action in Korea between 1950 and 1953 before being decommissioned in February 1955. However, she was recommissioned in May 1986 and had a round-the-world shakedown cruise before taking up station off the Persian Gulf. In 1991, she participated in strikes during the Persian Gulf War. She was finally decommisioned in March 1992.
In 1998, the U.S.S. Missouri reached Hawaiian waters, where she has become a popular tourist attraction, located in the middle of Pearl Harbor next to the Arizona Memorial. Virtually Hawaii highly recommends a visit to this impressive and historic ship. The following images give a flavor of what you can see from the upper deck, but more parts of the ship will soon be open to toursists, so come and take a look!
