Southwest Oahu Ground Tour

Stop 6: Geology Again!

Of course, one cannot drive around Oahu without seeing some really interesting geology, since even on the leeward side of the Waianae range we are close to the old volcano. Near Makaha there's a place where the old rift zone of the volcano is crossed by the road, and of course we all have to get out of the cars to see the dikes (the width of a single one is shown here by the red arrows). Notice that is dike is much thicker than the ones near Kailua on the windward side of Oahu; this is because we are further from the center of the old volcano, and only large volumes of magma could work their way along the rift zone to this distance.

Take a Look!
